The sacredness of space…the smell of routine

For the last 10 months I’ve been in a huge life experiment…move, adapt, survive, and work.

The work part of the equation has been much harder than anticipated.

For the last 13 years I’ve worked on church staffs that offered me the luxury of an office.  In this transition I’ve found myself working from my dining room table with my lap top or running off to the closest coffee shop.  Even when I worked out of an office I didn’t spend much time there.  I was out and about a lot.  But I’m realizing that there is something sacred about space.  Having a place where you have some of your books, a place to close the door, and  a chair that smells of routine.

Things are finally moving in that direction for me this week.  There is a couple at the church I go to that has a huge ranch house on 100 acres that they use for ministry.  Starting now they are going to allow The Rooster Party to start using an office out of one of their rooms.  I am extremely grateful!

Just the anticipation of a place to go is bringing me new life this morning.  There is something sacred about space.

There are a ton of people that can really work well from home but I’ve found it to be extremely difficult.  There are always things to be done around the house as you’re working and it’s difficult to put those things out of your mind.  The couch also has a strange draw in the middle of the day as you remember your episodes of The West Wing that are waiting patiently for you on Netflix .  Add to the mix that the kids are home for the summer all day and you have the recipe for getting nothing done.

My job has always been super flexible around my schedule and I could leave throughout the day for things that needed to get done because I put more than enough time in through the week.  But there’s something different about leaving for the “office.”  It feels like you’re less available for the day to day rhythm of life.  And when nothing is normal and your wife is working a job through the week that balance is extremely hard to find.

All that to say that I’m looking forward to having a space.
I’m taking at least 4 books, a stapler, a stapler remover, and something to hang on the wall!

Here’s to a new season in a new space, and a chair that will smell like my butt but hopefully will also have the fragrance of routine!

How do you work best?

Is space important to you?
